Make Holiday Talk!
Participate with poise at your next group gathering.
Do you dread mingling at holiday party time? The anticipation of having to engage in light conversation, often with people you don't know very well, can be very unmerry. Make it a more joyous experience by brushing up on these party-prepared ideas:
- Mentally construct a quick résumé. Before you head to the party, think of a few things you've experienced recently that could help you jump into conversation easily, such as an exciting trip, an interesting book, or a new movie. Also be ready with questions that encourage others to talk about their recent experiences.
- Find a friendly face upon arrival. Break the ice by seeking out the people you know and enjoy spending time with when you first arrive. Conversing with good communicators and those with which you already have a rapport will help you warm up and mingle.
- Let yourself be in the moment. Put your phone away, look around, and allow yourself to soak in the merriment that often accompanies holiday happenings. If the atmosphere inspires you, share a happy holiday memory or story with someone close by. Spread the spontaneous joy.
- Set realistic expectations. You should know going in that it's difficult to have in-depth exchanges at holiday gatherings. Be prepared for others to join in and even interrupt your conversation at times. Don't expect to resolve any pressing business or personal matters at the event.
- Plan to graciously exit. Before leaving the event, navigate your way around and wave/acknowledge/smile at the people or groups of people you haven't checked in with yet. Then, thank the host(s) of the party and find a genuine highlight to compliment. Leave with a positive party experience!
