Toastmasters International established the Ralph C. Smedley Memorial Fund® in 1965 to advance its mission through the research, development, and distribution of educational programs and materials relating to communication and leadership.

How will my contribution help others?Back to Top
Your gift, no matter how big or small, may provide support for member clubs experiencing the after effects of natural disasters, as well as those attempting to establish local youth programs. Specifically, contributions help in the form of waived or reduced dues and program-related fees, the provision or replacement of printed education materials, or the provision or replacement of club-specific noneducational materials (e.g., club banners, lecterns, etc.).

Can I designate my donation for a specific purpose (i.e. youth)?Back to Top
At this time, we ask that any donation be unrestricted to allow the Board of Directors to research, determine, and address the greatest needs.

Who authorizes distributions from the Smedley Fund?Back to Top
According to Policy 8.5, only the Board of Directors has the authority to approve distributions from the fund.

What are some examples of how the fund was used in the past?Back to Top
- A qualitative research project to explore opportunities for the youth market.
- The development of a new youth market program (Interpersonal Communication: A Toastmasters Youth Communication Module).
- Support of the development of the Toastmasters Pathways learning experience.
- Youth Leadership Program support for a school in Japan, government schools in Tamil Nadu, India, a secondary school in Johor, Malaysia, and the local branch of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. in North Carolina, USA.
- Support for members affected by Typhoon Odette in Philippines, an earthquake in Turkey and Morocco, and flooding in Nigeria.

Is my contribution tax deductible? What if I am not from the United States?Back to Top
Toastmasters International holds a 501(c)(3) nonprofit U.S. Federal tax exemption (EIN 95-1300076), which means that your contribution may be listed as a tax deduction if you live in the United States. If you live outside the United States, please consult your tax advisor to find out if your donation is tax deductible.

Yes! Updates are published on the Smedley Fund page and on social media platforms.

Will my company match my donation?Back to Top
To find out, click on "Search for company..." on the Smedley Fund page. If your organization/corporation matches your donation, information will populate including details of how corporate matching works.

Can I make an honorary/memorial gift?Back to Top
Yes. There is an option on the website to make this type of donation, and it is mentioned in the Smedley Fund Annual Report.

Can I make a bequest or leave money to the Smedley Fund in my will/trust?Back to Top
Yes. We suggest that you work with your estate planner to make sure this designation is handled correctly, but feel free to contact SmedleyFund@toastmasters.org with any questions.
