Aim Higher, Do More, and Become More—Through Mentorship
In this session, Dr. Stanley Mwenda Aruyaru will explain the origin of mentorship, highlight mentorship as it relates to surgery, and the aspirations of mentees looking up to mentors—this is the “Aim Higher” portion of his talk. He will then relay his personal mentorship experience, the ABCD’s of mentorship, and the benefits of mentorship in a professional career. This is where “Do More” comes in. Finally, he will outline how to go the extra mile for mentorship—take on mentees, establish mentorship projects, and perpetuate good leadership. This is the “Become More” aspect of his message.
Biography
Dr. Stanley Mwenda Aruyaru General surgeon, head of surgery, director of medical services
Born in a peasant family in Meru, Kenya, Dr. Stanley Mwenda Aruyaru was destined to become an artisan in motor vehicle mechanics—until his community raised funds to see him through secondary school.
After primary and secondary education, he advanced to Moi University for his undergraduate medical training. He worked in Consolata Hospital Nyeri for his internship and was posted as a general practitioner (medical officer) in Kilgoris. He later proceeded to The Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, for his post-graduate training in surgery.
Between 2017 and 2020, Dr. Aruyaru worked as the head of surgery in Consolata hospital Nyeri. Today, he is the director of medical services and quality improvement lead of a Level V hospital in Meru, which was recently voted the best faith-based hospital in Kenya.
