Secrets of Listening

27-minute video

In order to communicate well, Julian Treasure, our 2020 Golden Gavel recipient and a communication expert, believes it’s critically important to be able to listen well, too. A great listener has enormous advantages in the world. Listening is not a natural ability—it’s a skill that can be nurtured.

Three key takeaways:

  • Understand why listening is a key component of good communication.
  • Hear why a great listener has enormous world advantages.
  • Learn how to nurture the skill of listening, which is not a natural ability.

Entrepreneur, Communication Expert, Speaker, Author

In addition to being the 2020 Golden Gavel recipient, Julian Treasure is a sound and communication expert whose mission is to help people and organizations listen better and create healthier and more effective sound, including speaking. He is the author of How to be Heard and Sound Business.

Treasure’s five TED Talks have been watched more than 100 million times. How to Speak So That People Want to Listen is in the Top 10 TED Talks of all time. He is regularly featured in worldwide media and has hosted dozens of top podcasts.

In 2003, Treasure founded The Sound Agency, an audio-branding company that asks and answers the question, “How does your brand sound?” and works with some of the world’s biggest brands to design their sound. The agency’s award-winning work has made headlines internationally.

Treasure’s love of sound stems from his early experience as a musician. He was a drummer for indie bands, The Transmitters, Fish Turned Human, and Missing Presumed Dead, and recorded vinyl and two 1981 John Peel Sessions.

Before The Sound Agency, Treasure spent 30 years working in advertising and publishing. He founded, grew, and sold the contract magazine publishing agency TPD.

Treasure lives in Orkney (Scotland) with his fiancée—a multiple-world-champion martial artist, Jane Majendie, and their daughter.
