Relevant work experience and how it relates to Toastmasters and your role as a Board member:

As co-founder and CEO of Second Wave, Inc., I developed our global sales and marketing strategy, established international distribution channels, licensed our technology, and managed the technical support and customer service staff. As Executive Director of Texas Instruments Minicomputer Information Exchange (TI-MIX), I managed the organization’s daily operations, staff, finances, annual convention with 2000 in attendance, software library for sale to members, and the publication of our monthly magazine. This diverse business experience will make me a more informed, strategic TI Board Officer.

What experience do you have in strategic planning?

As First Vice President of Toastmasters International, I am co-chairing a committee in support of our 2015 Strategic Plan. As Second Vice President, I co-chaired the Leadership Development and Training committee and chaired the Engagement/Marketing committee. These committees recommended actions to achieve our initiatives for Club Excellence and Awareness, Engagement and Participation. As CEO of Second Wave, Inc., I was instrumental in developing and implementing the company's marketing strategic plans. As TI-MIX Executive Director, I worked directly with the Board of Directors to create strategic plans for the organization. I also presented these strategic plans to Texas Instruments management for their approval due to their part in funding the organization.

What experience do you have in the area of finance?

At both TI-MIX and Second Wave, Inc., I managed multi-million dollar budgets. I reported the financial status monthly to Texas Instruments regarding the funds they provided and created a separate income statement and balance sheet for the TI-MIX Board with the revenues from members. At Second Wave, Inc., I was responsible for the overall financial strength of the company, including managing timely collection of Accounts Receivable, maintaining current Accounts Payable, and tracking manufacturing inventory.

What experience do you have in developing policies?

As Second Vice President and Past International Director of Toastmasters International, I reviewed and recommended policy revisions for the benefit of our organization. I continue to do this as First Vice President. At Second Wave, Inc., I developed licensing and distribution policies. I have served as the chair and as a committee member multiple years to develop and revise district procedures. I helped write the original Lighthouse Estates Homeowners Association policies, serving on the first board of this HOA. In my current job, I create and teach curriculum on state and federal policies and recommend changes to procedures.

What lessons did you learn from previous leadership positions?

Engage your team in the vision and mission of the organization by having them create goals in alignment with the strategic plan. Leverage the strengths of each member of your team. Develop their strengths and they will exceed your expectations. Respect them and recognize their contributions. In return, they will be responsive and responsible to meet the organization's goals. Seek 360 degree feedback to continuously improve your own personal leadership skills.

What experience and key strengths would you bring to the Board of Directors?

I bring a diverse business background – CEO of a manufacturing company, marketing manager with a Fortune 500 company, Executive Director of an association, and senior training professional. I am currently serving as First Vice President of Toastmasters International and have served as Second Vice President and International Director. I served twice as Region 3 Advisor. I leverage the strengths of each team member to build productive teams. I foster consensus building through effective communication, mutual respect, and collaboration. I listen to all perspectives to create comprehensive solutions.

Why do you want to serve as an international officer/director?

I want to continue our work on the 2015 Strategic Plan to strengthen our organization, to better serve our members, clubs, districts, and regions around the world. I want to foster innovative approaches, adding more online tools and resources to enhance the quality of the club and member experience, to identify and develop more effective leaders, and to enhance our global marketing efforts. And, I want to serve our organization with humility and a continuous attitude of service to our members.

What volunteer experience do you have outside of Toastmasters?

101st Rescue Squadron in Afghanistan Fundraisers, Wee Wisdom Fundraisers, Metropolitan Breakfast Club, Austin Society of Talent Development, Lighthouse Estates Homeowners Association, Career Transition Coach, Church Volunteer Roles - Youth Education, Media Team, Contacting Weekly Guests, Volunteer Appreciation Celebration Site Host and Master of Ceremonies, Pebble Project (to prevent child abuse), Mobile Loaves and Fishes (to feed the homeless), Easter Seals

Have you worked with other Boards of Directors outside of Toastmasters? If so, describe your experience.

As TI-MIX Executive Director, I interfaced with a diverse board of Texas Instruments computer customers. I learned the value of research, analysis, and clear, complete communication in interfacing with board members to achieve timely solutions and decisions. On the Metropolitan Breakfast Club Board, a business networking group, I developed business relationships, and on the Lighthouse Estates Homeowners Association Board, I focused on creating a community.

In your opinion, what are Toastmasters International’s major objectives and how would you work to achieve them?

Major objectives - club excellence/quality, leader quality, quality member experience, member achievement, member and club retention and growth, global awareness, engagement and participation. I would promote the use of the Learning Management System (LMS) that will be part of our new Pathways educational program to support these objectives - to track submitted Club Success Plans, conducted Moments of Truth, mentor and member achievements, to implement 360 degree leadership evaluations, and to develop more online and marketing resources.

Additional information about candidate:

As District Governor in 1997-98, our district ranked #18 in the world, but we did not achieve Distinguished status because we missed our membership goal. For years that failure held me back from further leadership. Then I realized that “failure” in Toastmasters can only occur if we “fail” to continue our Toastmasters journey in developing our communication and leadership skills. Since then I have served as International Director, Region Advisor twice, Second Vice President, and now I have the privilege to serve as First Vice President.
