Relevant work experience and how it relates to Toastmasters and your role as a Board member:
I am currently employed at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center New Orleans (LSUHSC-NO) as an Information Technology Security Consultant. During my years of service at LSUHSC-NO and as an adjunct instructor at local colleges and universities, I have gained valuable experience that relates to my role as an International Director. My experience in technology and cybersecurity will be valuable to Toastmasters International as the educational and membership programs and systems continue to flourish and develop. My experience in analyzing and solving complex problems has equipped me to help make organizational decisions. As a certified Project Management Professional (PMP), I manage projects of varying sizes, scopes, and budgets, which will enable me to better understand and assist with overseeing Toastmasters International fiduciary responsibilities. My involvement in completing time-sensitive projects in high-pressure environments has prepared me to better meet the challenges that Toastmasters International encounters. My recent experience in winning national-level competitive grants to obtain funding has afforded me the ability to convey clear, concise, and cohesive organizational needs to external stakeholders. This will benefit me as a Toastmasters International board member when we develop and communicate policies. My years as an instructor have equipped me to understand the educational needs of our members and ask the right questions when addressing significant member disciplinary matters.
What experience do you have in strategic planning?
My experience in strategic planning includes project management activities, product/vendor selection processes, and development of a long-term cyberinfrastructure plan.
What experience do you have in the area of finance?
My experience in the area of finance includes creating, managing, and monitoring budgets for projects.
What experience do you have in developing policies?
My experience in developing policies includes development of user security and technology policies for LSUHSC-NO. Additionally, as a board member of the University of New Orleans International Alumni Association, I have experience in developing organizational bylaws.
What lessons did you learn from previous leadership positions?
Some of the lessons that I have learned from previous leadership positions include: the importance of developing other people; the need for taking calculated risks; the value of consistency and persistence as well as trust; significance of learning from one's failures; how to lead by example and manage priorities; and the importance of demonstrating empathy during difficult times.
What experience and key strengths would you bring to the Board of Directors?
The experience and key strengths I bring to the Board of Directors are background in technology; analytical skills; project management experience; goal-oriented and results-driven nature; global awareness; passion for Toastmasters; experience starting and supporting Toastmasters clubs in prisons, Pathways Guide and Ambassador tenure; and experience with reviving a struggling Toastmasters district.
Why do you want to serve as an international officer/director?
I am passionate about serving our members and organization as we change lives and help individuals find their voice. With the recent organizational, educational, and technological changes, the next few years are crucial for our members and organization. In collaboration with other Board members, I want to develop policies and plans to ensure that we continue to be the organization “Where Leaders Are Made.” Additionally, I would like to gain experience in International policy development and strategic planning.
What volunteer experience do you have outside of Toastmasters?
My volunteer experience outside Toastmasters includes: serving as a co-chair on Louisiana Optical Network Initiative's security working group; serving as a workshop planning committee member for National Science Foundation; serving on panels to review grant proposals; teaching free technology bootcamp courses; serving on the program advisory committee for Herzing University and ITT Technical Institute; serving as a project manager on the routing team for Super Computing 2018 conference; serving as a Fuel user group organizer, serving as a mentor for high school students who participated in the Cyberpatriot program; served on the board of the University of New Orleans International Alumni Association as the College of Sciences representative; and organizing improv troupes to perform at assisted living facilities.
Have you worked with other Boards of Directors outside of Toastmasters?
Yes, I have served on the board of the University of New Orleans International Alumni Association as the College of Sciences representative. Our initial activity focused on providing political support for the fledgling University. We met often to hand address all correspondence. Our efforts laid a strong foundation upon which future graduates can build.
In your opinion, what are Toastmasters International’s major objectives and how would you work to achieve them?
In my opinion, Toastmasters International's major objectives include: serving members, expanding outreach globally, upholding the mission, developing and communicating organizational policies, and approving and overseeing the budget. I will utilize my skills and experience to collaborate with other board members and Toastmasters' staff to achieve the aforementioned objectives. Furthermore, I will be open to mentoring from more experienced board members and I will strive to serve as an ambassador for Toastmasters International, honoring and exhibiting the Toastmasters core values of integrity, respect, service, and excellence.
