Relevant work experience and how it relates to Toastmasters and your role as a Board member:

At Colina, I'm a Senior Advisor in the field of Insurance and Employee Benefits by profession with 33 years of experience in the insurance based financial services industry. Previously held positions include: Sales Manager, Branch Manager, Recruiter, Company Trainer and Mentoring coordinator. I have gained comprehensive experience in team leadership, establishing budgets and sales targets, training and human resource development, assisting with the production and roll out of new products, assisting with product and procedures manuals. This exposure I feel will also enable me to make a positive contribution to the Board of Directors and its strategic approach to realizing exponential growth in Toastmasters.

What experience do you have in strategic planning?

I gained significant experience in strategic planning as a Co-Founder and Director of an independent insurance brokerage firm established in 2009 in Nassau Bahamas. Through my active involvement in the preparation of the initial business plan and completing the stringent regulatory and compliance prerequisites for launching this business, and in my previous role as a branch manager at a major insurance conglomerate, where I led a sales team and staff of about 30 persons to maintain productivity and exceed targets.

What experience do you have in the area of finance?

I am not an accountant. However, as a partner/director of a growing Insurance Agency I play a role in establishing financial guidelines and strategies to maintain a solvent business entity. Additionally, I have spent 5 years as a board member of my church which is over 200 years old with a large congregation and an extensive budget. My job entails offering advice to clients on personal financial planning concepts. Additionally, I have a reasonable working knowledge of finances from a business perspective.

What experience do you have in developing policies?

As a business partner in a growing organization, I am constantly involved in the process of developing operational policies and procedures to go vern the organization to improve service and enhance profitability. In my prior role as a board member of a major international financial industry professional organization headquartered in Chicago with a global membership in 70 countries, policy development was an integral part of my core responsibility as a member of the executive committee.

What lessons did you learn from previous leadership positions?

One of the most important lessons learnt is that every individual can make a positive contribution. I believe great potential lies in everyone - it’s just a matter of the individuals believing in themselves and someone else believing in them. I've learned the need to be decisive when dealing with various adversities, for example - conflict. Additionally, I have become even more convinced of the importance of having mentors as a leader. Using persons who have walked the same road before you can help you avoid many mistakes and stumbling blocks.

What experience and key strengths would you bring to the Board of Directors?

I have an attitude of humility and friendliness, the ability to remain focused and to show strength through adversity and a keen attention to details. I respect leadership and authority and I’m an organized planner and proactive thinker. I believe my strengths in the areas of training, mentoring and marketing could be beneficial to the board.

Why do you want to serve as an international officer/director?

In addition to a broad prospective of and deep appreciation for cultural and ethnic diversity, I have a deep love for and personal indebtedness to Toastmasters. Its 4 core values are included in the values instilled in me since my birth, by which I'm guided daily. The knowledge and leadership experience acquired over the years in Toastmasters have transcended to my professional life immeasurably. It has given me the ability to search for creative and effective ways to eliminate barriers and bring about positive improvements in myself and others. I would be thrilled by the opportunity to contribute to the further growth and development of our organization from the board level.

What volunteer experience do you have outside of Toastmasters?

As a member of Bahamas Roadmasters Running Club, I serve as Public Relations Officer and Community Outreach Coordinator. I am the Communications Chairperson and photographer at my church. An historic 200+ year old institution with a large congregation and budget.

Have you worked with other Boards of Directors outside of Toastmasters?

The value and diversity that Board members bring to the outcome of strategic planning goals is important. Being in Toastmasters taught me how to conduct effective meetings and how to lead teams toward achieving a common objective. This has been beneficial in my involvement with a variety of boards and community outreach programs as detailed above. I'll describe all of my experiences as being invaluable.

In your opinion, what are Toastmasters International’s major objectives and how would you work to achieve them?

I believe the major objectives are membership growth and retention and expansion of the organization through exploration of new and emerging markets. Additionally, finding new ways to support our global membership and to enhance the member experience. The enhancement of existing resource material for example, new language translations and the implementation of new resources such as Pathways are just some of the exciting initiatives as I see it. Additional objectives I believe are the development of more online digital resources and mentoring materials.
