World Championship of Public Speaking

 2007-2008 International Speech Contest Winners

Vikas Jhingran, a 34-year-old Toastmaster and doctoral candidate at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, emerged victorious and claimed the title of 2007 World Champion of Public Speaking. His speech, “The Swami’s Question,” dealt with the importance of introspection. He explained, “Our lives are often so busy, we don’t take time to know ourselves – our goals, our dreams, our weaknesses or strengths. …This is the story of how excellence is in all of us, if we just stop and listen to ourselves every day so that we align our actions outside with who we are inside.”

A native of Morabadad, India, Jinghran is finishing his doctoral thesis in Ocean Engineering. His speech told about his own journey to academic excellence and getting accepted to MIT, the graduate school of his dreams. Since he came to MIT in 2004, he’s been involved in leadership and communications courses. He says public speaking is an integral part of his life and plans on applying it in his engineering career.

Second- and third-place winners in the World Championship of Public Speaking were Rory Vaden of Nashville, Tennessee, with his speech “Slam!” and Mark Hunter of Albany Creek, Queensland, Australia, with his speech “Face to Face, Eye to Eye, Heart to Heart.”
